Into Ancient Rome: Getty Villa Outer Peristyle, Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles
$150.00 USD
High above the Pacific in Malibu's Pacific Palisades, the Getty Villa invites visitors to walk straight into the ancient world. J. Paul Getty modeled it on the Villa dei Papiri, a Roman country house buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, and this photograph captures its most immersive space: the long, sunlit colonnade of the Outer Peristyle.
The view runs the full length of the walkway, so every element draws the eye toward a single vanishing point. Gleaming white columns march down the left side, opening onto manicured gardens and the green Santa Monica Mountains. To the right, a painted wall unfolds in classical Roman style, with garlands, faux marble panels, and bands of turquoise and gold. Overhead, a coffered ceiling studded with gilded rosettes repeats into the distance, while underfoot, a polished terracotta-red floor and a crisp black-and-white Greek key border complete the illusion.
The result is pure classical order, rich in color and detail, that rewards close looking. On the wall, it opens up a room like a window onto another era, perfect for an entryway, a hallway, a dining room, or any space that deserves a sense of grandeur.
Only 12 prints will ever be made at this size. Each is printed locally in San Francisco on Hahnemühle Photo Rag, a 100% cotton, museum-grade paper whose soft matte surface captures the fine detail of the frescoes and mosaics and holds the warm golds and terracotta reds beautifully.
