Cross of Light: Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption, San Francisco | Limited Edition of 12 copy
$150.00 USD
San Franciscans nicknamed it "Our Lady of Maytag" for the way its concrete roof twists skyward like a washing machine agitator. Step inside and look straight up, and the joke gives way to one of the most breathtaking ceilings in American architecture.
This photograph locks Pier Luigi Nervi and Pietro Belluschi's 1971 masterpiece onto a single, perfectly symmetrical axis. Thousands of precast concrete coffers tighten as they rise, drawing the eye toward the peak, where Gyorgy Kepes's stained glass ribbons meet to form a cross that bursts into light. From there, the glass leads back down into Richard Lippold's shimmering suspended aluminum rods. At the base of the frame, a heavy concrete beam and a glow of warm wood and colored glass ground all that weightlessness.
On the wall, it reads as both abstraction and sanctuary: geometric enough for a modern interior, quiet enough for a place of reflection.
Only 12 prints will ever be made at this size. Each is printed locally in San Francisco on Hahnemühle Photo Rag, a 100% cotton, museum-grade paper whose soft matte surface gives the concrete real tactile depth and renders the stained glass with rich, luminous color.
