Cedar, Shadow, and Stair: The Sea Ranch Lodge, Sonoma Coast, California | Limited Edition of 12
$150.00 USD
On a windswept stretch of the Sonoma Coast, The Sea Ranch became one of the most influential experiments in American architecture. Starting in the 1960s, landscape architect Lawrence Halprin and a small group of architects, including Joseph Esherick and the firm of Moore Lyndon Turnbull Whitaker, set out to build a community that would sit lightly on the land, with simple wood forms weathering naturally into the coastal grasses and cypress.
This photograph distills that philosophy into a single quiet scene at The Sea Ranch Lodge. Rendered in black and white, the vertical cedar boards become a study in grain, tone, and rhythm, each plank aged to its own shade of silver. A stairway cuts a bold diagonal across the frame, leading the eye up to a simple door, while four white gooseneck lamps punctuate the walls like notes on a page.
Without color, everything comes down to texture, proportion, and light. It's calm, honest, and deeply Californian. On the wall, it brings a sense of order and stillness to a study, a bedroom, or a minimalist living space, and it pairs beautifully with other monochrome work.
Only 12 prints will ever be made at this size. Each is printed locally in San Francisco on Hahnemühle Photo Rag, a 100% cotton, museum-grade paper whose soft matte surface brings out every line of the weathered wood grain and holds smooth, rich gradations from silver to deep charcoal.
